Happy Halloween!

Heh, I'll bet some of you are already ready to pound me! "Halloween is evil - how could you even think about celebrating it?" Well, if you'll hear me through, I shall explain.

For me, Halloween is not a time to celebrate evil. That's that, simply laid out. I do not have any support for the origins of the holiday. But, I do have my own past regarding Halloween, and I have quite enjoyed it every year. I absolutely love traditions, especially personal ones, and I make new ones and discarded old ones almost every Halloween.

There are also things that I once did on Halloween that I can no longer do, but loved doing when I could do them: Trick-or-treating, going to the cornfield carnival at our church, dressing up, the "pumpkin run" at my old elementary school, visits to the pumpkin patch, carving out jack-o-lanterns...All of them were loads of fun, and I get a surge of nostalgia every time I think about them. For me, Trick-or-treating was not just about candy, and when I opened the cupboards to get at my delectable treats, I cherished the smell that met me from my Trick-or-treating bag and the candy wrappers.

To me, it's also a celebration of the time of year. I love fall, though I don't completely remember why until it comes every year. I enjoy the fallen leaves, the wind, the clouds, the rain...everything. And Halloween feels like the peak of it all.

Again, I despise the spookiness and darkness of Halloween. I dislike scary costumes or detailed, bloody masks. And I am strongly against the things that many people do on Halloween, all over the world.

Some might say that it is still wrong to celebrate such a dark holidy. First of all, I'm not celebrating the holiday - at least, not everyone else's. I'm celebrating my own that was created out of the one that everyone else celebrates. And second, celebrating on a holiday with dark origins, as long as I do not celebrate or agree with the evil side of it, does not make me an evil person any more than being an American citizen makes somebody a good person or a Christian. Just because the country has Christian origins, does not mean that every person who lives in it or celebrate the fourth of July has a heart for those morals.

Happy Halloween - Ian's edition!

Ciao!

I haven't celebrated halloween since I was in the 3rd grade, but I do hand out candy. It was weird though, cuz there were only like a few kids this year, but the stats said there were more than ever or sumpin like that

I've never done Halloween, but I really wanted to when I was younger. Maybe I'll try it sometime.

Great points by the way!
